Description

The Anghelu Ruju Necropolis is located in the territory of the city of Alghero, on the west coast of Sardinia. It is the largest hypogeal pre-Nuragic necropolis in Sardinia, consisting of thirty-eight rooms (Domus de Janas) of limestone sandstone. Numerous findings have allowed the site to be dated to a period ranging from 3,500 to 1,800 BC, and the decorations symbolizing the afterlife are very interesting: taurine protomes, false access doors, ocher red coloring. In some environments it is still possible to admire enigmatic propitiatory signs and typical elements of the religiosity of the Neolithic and Eneolithic period of the Mediterranean area thanks to the presence of bas-reliefs and engravings.
